Jellyfish Exhibit Room (Kuranetarium)

At any given time there are 30?40 varieties of jellyfish on display in the Kuranetarium. We are proud to have the largest number of species on display in the world. In the slightly darkened exhibit room, the jellyfish gently swim to the top of the tank, creating a magical mood and filling the room with an extraordinary feeling of contentment.

In addition to the jellyfish that were bred at the aquarium, the exhibit includes many that have been collected from the ocean waters located just in front of the aquarium. The jellyfish on display change with each season.

Magnifying Glass Corner

The majority of jellyfish on display are from the tiny Hydromedusae species. There are some extremely small jellyfish, so magnifying glasses have been provided to let visitors see them up close.

Palau Corner

This display exhibits jellyfish collected from the island of Palau, located 3,000km to the south of Japan. The jellyfish were collected in conjunction with research conducted by the Faculty of Science at Yamagata University.

The Life Cycle of Moon Jellyfish

The life cycle of the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) is shown, including the polyp and ephyra from various stages of the reproductive cycle. Visitors can get a glimpse into the ecology of the fascinating jellyfish and learn about their development and reproduction.

Feeding the Jellyfish

While the moon jellyfish are being fed, a staff member explains how the jellyfish get food, how they eat, and their physiological make-up. After the explanation, visitors can actually touch the moon jellyfish to see how the mysterious creatures feel.
